Maximerz

Tunku Abdul Rahman College Talentime Night 2009.

Ok ok some of you may be wondering WHAT ON EARTH a Taylor's student was doing at the TARC Talentime Night. BETRAYING TAYLOR'S?! HOW DARE SHE!

Well, I WAS once a TARC student for a couple of months, and technically my student card only expires in November. But the real reason that I went for Talentime Night is..

Phraveen!

He, along with Bryan Chin, was the main emcee for the event.. meaning he had TICKETS to give away. So one fine afternoon he texts me to ask, "Angel. Do you want to go for talentime night?" Last year, I left to go to Taylor's on the very day of Talentime Night, so of course I jumped at the opportunity to have this experience AND see my neighbor/friend/ex-classmate/mortal onstage. :)

The dress code was formal, so almost everyone was dressed to kill. I don't know about them, but I am glad I didn't wear a dress to an event where all I did was sit on my butt and watch performances. Hardly worth all the dressing up.

The stage was very magnificently done and I cannot even begin to describe the AMAZING performance all the finalists put on.

DANCING CLOWNS!
BEATBOXING!
POWERFUL VOCALS!
PERASAN EMCEES!
CINA-FIED ENGLISH SONGS!
AH BENGS!
TALENTED VIOLINIST!
EXTREME DRUMMING!
JUNE KEYS!
PROVOCATIVE DANCE MOVES!
WEIRD NEANDERTHAL DANCE!
BREAK-DANCING HUMAN TOPS!
ACROBATICS!
CANDY CHEAH!

Ahhh there were cringe-inducing moments, like a very cina (but otherwise good) version of "It's the Start of Something New", inevitable lame lines from the emcees, some really unsightly hairdos, male finalists in Really Tight Pants, female finalists who Bordered on Being Slutty, and the four girls sitting behind me whose screams were loud and often enough to give me a headache. Every time the phrase "triple S H" was mentioned, they shrieked like the world was going to end. I thought my eardrums were going to explode.

AND THE CLOWNS! For some unfathomable reason, clowns just give me the creeps.

But there were plenty of fun moments. One that I remember in particular is when the emcees approached members of the audience to answer questions in return for gift vouchers. This emcee named Chee Huat went to a girl and said, "The theme tonight is Maximerz, which means 'circus'. Now let me ask you, what does Maximerz mean?" The girl deliberated for very long, but she finally answered, "Circus lor.." and the emcee went, "OH MY GOD YOU ARE SO SMART!!!" Then he went up to a second girl and said, "My name is Chee Huat, C-H-E-E H-U-A-T. Who do you think is the most handsome emcee in this event?" She repeated his name, and he again went, "OH MY GOD YOU ARE SO SMART!!!" hahaha funny lah that guy.

And of course, there were impressive talents. An instrumental group who performed songs they had composed on their own. An UNBELIEVABLY good violinist from Moonlight Shadow. Bryan's band, Rosevelt's debut performance. June's AMAZING rendition of "If I Ain't Got You". Really good dancers and really good dances. A local celebrity, Candy Cheah blew us away with Misha Omar's "Bunga-Bunga Cinta" and Christina Aguilera's "Reflection". The energy from the performers and the crowd was excellent all night, and it was an obviously successful event.

ANDDDDD PHRAVEEN IN EMCEE-ING ACTION WOOHOOOOO so proud of you. :)

Shall just end with this picture I stole from Facebook. It's of Phraveen and his friends.

Apologies and credits to a guy named Amirul Ruslan hehe.

Major Crisis

What should I do for the rest of my life?! :(

In the process of choosing courses and planning my Fall 2009 timetable, I've shortlisted some majors and minors, but.. I don't know lah. The list of possible majors would be creative writing, cognitive science, economics, english, history, linguistics, professional writing, psychology, technical writing and communication. Possible minors are, gosh, photography, physics, sociology, or a major that didn't work out hahaha.

BUT TELL ME. WHAT WOULD I DO WITH THOSE MAJORS?! Seriously. CREATIVE WRITING?! HISTORY?! PSYCHOLOGY?! And English reminds me of the Avenue Q song, "It Sucks To Be Me", where the beginning goes "What do you do, with the BA in English? What is my life going to be? Four years of college, and plenty of knowledge, has earned me this useless degree.."

Oh boy. Not that I'm insulting the English degree.

I used to be so convinced that we should do what we love, and love what we do. But I'm just wondering, whether doing what I like is going to bounce back at me and hit me in the face when I find myself graduated with a not-in-demand weird degree.. and I've been half-considering quitting this whole social science thing and going to medical school, because at least you'd know for certain that at the end of those many years of medical school, you'll be a doctor. Simple as that.

Maybe when push comes to shove, I lose sight of my principles and dreams, forfeiting them for hopes of a higher salary and public approbation. All in the name of a better future. Maybe this is the reality of life, of growing up, of realizing that doing what you love is out of the question because you have to do what it takes to pay bills and fund your children's education. In the end, work is about money, money, money.

Hahaha I sound really cynical.

Yeah I'm confused about the future and rather anxious about my English placement, so IS IT VERY SURPRISING that I don't feel like thinking about how many kilograms of luggage I'm allowed, or how much clothes I need to bring, or what the Pittsburgh weather is going to be like?! Those stuff are important too, but I just sort-of have other things on my mind.

Sighhhhh haha and no lah it is not possible that I'm going to medical school. That, at least, is certain.

edit: It's not all about money. It's using God-given talents, serving others, being a testimony. Sometimes I forget.

I finally watched Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. :)

Clay Day

Liao4

That's the Chinese character of my surname, 廖! The bottom part is very moustache-looking kan?

Jun1

And this is the last character of my Chinese name, 君. :)

It's been a long, long, long time since I did any craft. When I was in SJK (C) Lee Rubber, we used to have this system. Four afternoons a week, we would have tuition classes, and the remaining afternoon was used for an activity of our choice. The options were drawing, craft, gymnastics, and I believe there were a few sports. I picked craft every year ahaha and made all kinds of junk.. a kite, a weaved bag, a photo frame. Some of these stuff are still collecting dust around my house. I remember I used to be so scared of blades! Actually I still am hahaha.

OK ENOUGH GRANDMOTHER STORY.

The other day Joel was having this Pendidikan Seni crisis, so I jumped in and helped him out a little. Shhh, don't tell his teacher! Using toothpicks, we meticulously carved our surname in clay.

Outlining the character made me miss Chinese calligraphy. :( ahaha for all my years in primary school, I sucked at calligraphy. My writing would be straight and plain and not in the least aesthetic. Then I took Chinese tuition for Form 1-3 and suddenly my calligraphy improved. Haha I remember they allocated 8 marks in the paper for calligraphy, and it was like the most fun part of the paper. PMR-level 文言文.. haha I miss.

Seems like I'm in a remembering mood lol.

RUBIKS' CUBE!!!

Here comes another story hahaha.. do you see that disfigured cube in front? Today I learnt how to solve a Rubik's cube, so I took out a small keychain cube I remember buying. I tried to solve it, but it was sort-of rigid and broke into pieces under my harsh twists. As I gathered the pieces and disposed of them, it hit me that I actually bought it SEVEN YEARS AGO at Langkawi during my primary school graduation trip. I was twelve years old.. and now I'm nineteen.

I'm speechless. Where did all those years go?

Today.. haha today was full of Rubik's cube. As Joshua so bluntly puts it, "二姐 your WHOLE day today revolved around the cube. Morning- learning how to solve it; afternoon- practicing how to solve it; night- teach Joel how to solve it." Izzzzz trueeeee lol.

I'm not done with this post yet! I want to say a few more things. Firstly, Andy Roddick just got into the Wimbledon 2009 finals and I am all smiles! :) secondly, HAPPY JULY EVERYONE! And thirdly, I sound happy in this post but I'm not really THAT happy at all. I mean, I'm ok, but I appear to be happier than I am hahaha.

Hahaha wheeeee! :) :D ^^

This is really all it takes to create the perception of happiness.

Good intentions are not good enough..

Tau-tau Lah

This week in my life..

work in the mornings
too many afternoon naps
U.S. visa interview
Marie biscuit cake
Monsters vs Aliens
fifth Greek class
Monica and Simon's farewell dinner
supper (so few people!)
Matt's choir concert
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
maybe KLue Urbanscapes
maybe brownies!

So I've been quite occupied, for a rotting-at-home person, and it's been all good. But nothing matches up to sitting here talking to you. Really. :)
